Find Your Frame Book Review

I recently started reading “Find Your Frame” by Craig Whitehead from Amazon which I had pre-ordered in the summer. Craig, or Sixstreetunder as he is known on instagram is a street photographer from the UK. His book is a personal guide to how he thinks about street photography and lessons from his experiences. I am a fan of Craig’s photography, having followed him on Instagram and also having seen him on a Kai Wong YouTube video (something he talks about in his book). Craig’s style uses a lot of colour and has more abstract compositions which are very different from the sort of images I try to create. It is really important to study the techniques and images from established photographers working in the same genre of your photographs. This I think is especially true when their style is different from your own because it can encourage you to think differently and ultimately this leads to more photographic opportunities and better images.

Some of the discussion regarding what makes a street photograph timeless is also very interesting. This is especially true today when there are lots of very similar images on places like Instagram. Seeing in Retrospect is what Craig calls it and it is thinking about how your images might be perceived both now but also in the future.

The book also looks at the different elements of crafting a photograph, composition, framing, light, contrast and how Craig applies these to Street Photography. I like that the book is encouraging for photographers to explore and find their own styles which is something I have been trying to focus on over the last 12 months.

This book is definitely worth a read as Craig produces some really unique images and he has lots of experience that is useful to not only street photographers but to anyone who is trying to produce unique images

Craig’s photographs can be found at his instagram SixStreetUnder and his book can be purchased at both Waterstones and Amazon. I have no affiliation with the author and paid for my own copy.
